Veneer

1. What is Veneer porcelain?
Veneer porcelain (Laminate porcelain) is a thin shell material with a thickness of 0.3 - 0.5mm, similar to the color of the tooth, attached to the outer surface of the tooth, hugging the entire tooth. It helps improve the shape of the tooth and achieve the desired aesthetics. Veneer is usually made of porcelain, composite or synthetic resin, permanently attached to the tooth.

Veneer porcelain method can also be used to treat some aesthetic problems. Specifically, the subjects who should have Veneer porcelain teeth include:

  • People with worn edges;
  • People with cracked or chipped teeth due to trauma;
  • People with sparse teeth, gaps between teeth;
  • People with slightly misaligned teeth, uneven growth, abnormal shape;
  • People with teeth that are discolored due to smoking, using antibiotics or teeth whitening is ineffective.

Some subjects should not have Veneer porcelain teeth include:

  • People with periodontal disease;
  • People with crooked teeth or severe malocclusion;
  • Patients with large cavities, teeth with worn enamel.

When applying porcelain veneers, the doctor only grinds a thin layer on the tooth surface, without affecting the dentin or sensitive tissues around the tooth. During the procedure, the patient will be anesthetized to reduce pain.

2. What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are highly appreciated because:

High aesthetics: Porcelain veneers change the color, shape and size of the teeth, making them more even and beautiful. At the same time, the color of porcelain veneers is quite natural, so it helps you look fresher and more confident when smiling;
Less impact on real teeth: When applying porcelain veneers, you only need to grind very little tooth tissue, so it does not damage the teeth. At the same time, this method rarely causes pulp death or requires root canal treatment;
Ensure chewing function: Dentists only grind a little on the outside of the tooth when applying porcelain veneers, so it does not affect the anatomical structure of the tooth tissue much. Therefore, your chewing function will not be affected. In particular, this method does not remove much tooth tissue, does not invade the pulp, so it minimizes tooth sensitivity;
High durability: Porcelain Veneer has high durability with an average lifespan of 10 - 15 years if performed by a highly skilled doctor, modern dental equipment and the patient takes good care of their teeth.

3. Veneer bonding process

The Veneer bonding process is as follows:

  • Teeth examination: The dentist will check whether your teeth are suitable for Veneer bonding. At the same time, the doctor will examine the patient's general oral condition, take X-rays to check for defects, determine the cause of damage and the number of teeth that need restoration. In case of tooth decay, tartar or tooth loss, the doctor will treat it before bonding the porcelain;
  • Grinding down the enamel: To prepare for dental work, the doctor will usually grind down a small amount of enamel, creating space for Veneer bonding to the tooth;
  • Taking a dental impression, choosing the tooth color: The doctor will take a rubber impression of the teeth, choosing the color of the Veneer to match the patient's teeth;
  • Creating a simulated shape for the Veneer: The dental impression is sent to the dental lab to create a simulated shape so that the porcelain veneer fits the patient's teeth. The procedure usually takes a few days, so the doctor can attach temporary teeth to the patient while waiting;
  • Veneer on the teeth: At the next visit, the doctor will place the Veneer on the patient's teeth to check the level of suitability, adjusting to the shape of the teeth. After the treatment is complete, the doctor will clean the teeth and attach the Veneer.

After the porcelain is attached, the doctor will instruct the patient on how to clean the teeth and have a reasonable diet so that the teeth maintain their color for a long time.

4. Care after porcelain veneer bonding

Some notes that patients need to remember after porcelain veneer bonding are:

  • Build healthy eating habits to ensure the longevity of the porcelain surface and oral health. You should not smoke to avoid harming your teeth. At the same time, you should avoid drinking dark colored drinks to ensure the durability and beauty of your teeth. You should also divide the biting force into both sides of the jaw, avoid using one side of the jaw too much. In particular, you should limit eating sweet, chewy, hard foods, do not use your teeth to open bottle caps, tear packaging or bite your nails, etc.;
